New cancer hospital plans stir concerns

2/27/2009

Recent health-care legislation aimed at reforming the state's laborious certificate-of-need (CON) rules has cracked open the door for a specialty cancer treatment center in metro Atlanta.

Suburban Chicago-based Cancer Treatment Centers of America Inc.'s (CTCA) plans to build a $150 million specialty hospital near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has some area hospital administrators working the worry beads. They are concerned the new hospital would siphon away paying patients and poach already limited physician and nursing talent.

"They are not going to bring any new capability to the Atlanta area that we don't already have," said Kirk Wilson, CEO of Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta. "They're a commercial organization that's going to skim off the top and try to attract commercial patients, for the most part."
